Bring Your Space To Life
Follow these six essential elements to achieve a beautifully decorated room you won't want to leave.
The first essential element is a no brainer! Nothing brings life into a space quite like foliage. Indoor plants, floral arrangements or a collection of garden greenery, your choice. They certainly act to break up the harshness of an environment and have many benefits. A few examples are;
Spider plant - these are easy to maintain, purify the air by absorbing carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and xylene and they are pet friendly.
Snake plant or mother-in-laws tongue - these are fantastic in a bedroom as they convert CO2 into oxygen at night and also filter formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene, toluene and benzene. Unfortunately, keep these away from children and pets as they are moderately toxic.
Zanzibar gem - these plants thrive on neglect. Never mind if you forget to water it every second day, weekly is usually fine.
Indoor plants are happiest in a well-lit corner of the room out of direct sunlight.
Which brings us onto natural light ... your space will feel so much more welcoming if it has a generous helping of sunlight. If windows are exposed to full sun, use curtains or blinds to filter the light. There's comfort to be had in a sunlit reading nook or daybed. Natural light will also keep mould growth at bay and save on energy costs.
The third essential element is colour. Colour can emit an entire mood or feeling within a space. A great way to bring your favourite hue into a space is by researching trending colours. This way you can implement a whole colour palette into your space via artwork, soft furnishings and wall paper or wall paint.
Adding layers is the fourth essential element. By this I mean in the form of a variety of textures such as smooth, rough, patterned, stripey, fluffy, knitted, glossy, the list is endless! Doing this adds fun and interest to your space. Personally, I love choosing a mix of natural fibres and materials as they are a wonderful sustainable option.
The fifth element is comfort. Your special space needs to entice you in and make the user feel welcome. What is the main use of the room? For say, a bedroom, ensure you have the actual bed giving off massive comfort vibes. Use fabrics which you personally love and definitely layer it up for Winter warmth.
The sixth and final element is accent or task lighting. What mood do you want to portray within the space in the evening? Lamps, wall sconces, pendants, chandeliers, track lighting, etc can give off a warm, calming glow or possibly shadows and shapes adding a whole new night time drama to your space. Task lighting will essentially light up a particular work zone such as a desk or dressing room table. Choosing the right globe can also change the feel quite dramatically so think about the choice between a warm, yellow light or a cool, white light.
I hope these tips help you on your way to bring your space to life.
